On the weekend of July 26-27, 2009 the inaugural Country Rock and Camp Oven Cooking Festival was held at the Neurum Creek Camping Grounds.
Derek Bullock demonstrated to attendees how to cook in a camp oven using Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes as the source of heat. This demonstration included a lesson on how to cook a basic damper.

Following this everyone was sent back to their campsite to partake in the damper cooking competition. There were three categories: plain, sweet and savoury damper and competitors worked in teams of two.
33 dampers were submitted and Derek, as the sole judge, had the task of tasting each one of them!

At the end of the day, the winners of each of the three categories enjoyed the pleasure of a three-course meal, all cooked in camp ovens, with Derek at “the Captains Table”.
The mouth-watering menu consisted of pumpkin soup, roast lamb shoulder and vegetables followed by chocolate self-saucing pudding and cream. Wine was donated by Winya Wines who also conducted wine tasting throughout the day.
