The BBQ temperature is determined by the amount of Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes burning inside. Here are the quantities to follow to reach your desired heat (based on using a 57cm kettle BBQ):
For the Indirect Cooking Method:
- For a high heat, use approximately 3.5kg of briquettes, 1.75kg on each side of your BBQ (or fill the baskets on your kettle BBQ to heaped piles)
- For a medium heat, use approximately 3kg of briquettes, 1.5kg on each side of your BBQ (or fill the baskets on your kettle BBQ until they are level)
- For a low heat, use approximately 2.4kg briquettes, 1.2kg on each side of your BBQ (or slightly under fill the baskets on your kettle BBQ)
If you are using the Direct Cooking Method:
- For a high heat, use approximately 3kg of briquettes
- For a medium heat, use approximately 2.5kg of briquettes
- For a low heat, use approximately 2kg briquettes
This might seem tricky to begin with, but the great thing about using Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes is that the heat can easily be controlled by closing over the vents on your BBQ to reduce the air flow, and therefore the temperature.

Why did the fire go out on one side when using the indirect cooking method?
This happens because the fires were not equally established before the lid was placed on the BBQ.
